Gakken New Block Tool Set

Japanese sets somehow quietly, but very quickly made their way to Amazon and became more accessible… Among them is Gakken aka New Block Gakken. And now, forgotten 3 years ago, the dream of a waffle building set + tools set began to hover again in our house. Probably 2 potential owners of this set have grown up during this time. The set has 80 parts of 22 types – basic “waffle” parts. There are also screws and nuts, and also tools, including a saw, a screwdriver, a wrench, and a hammer.

You can use the tools in constructions along with other parts. Each tool has a special protrusion for connection with parts. A screwdriver, for example, can be the nose of a spaceship, and a saw can propel a quite nice flying machine nose. Naturally, you can, and should, use the tools for their intended purpose – unscrewing, tightening, sawing, hammering. Knowing the quality of the Japanese Gakken construction set, I expect the set to be very useful and entertaining. It comes in a box with a lid that serves as a base for construction. You can attach the crafts to the special slots on its surface.

Unlike Plus Plus waffle blocks, Gakken blocks have pieces of many different shapes. They have round and curved pieces, long beams and H-like pieces. The empty spaces inside the blocks also can have different sizes and shapes, so you can stack inside different pieces in different positions. All this allows even more building possibilities than the waffle blocks sets with similar pieces. However, some pieces have less connection opgtions, because they don’t have pegs on the sides, or have only one hole.

Gakken brand appeared in Tokyo back in 1946 when it became an important component of Japan’s post-war efforts to rebuild the nation. Back then, it became incredible important to properly raise a new generation that will be able to create a better future.

The founder and educator, Hideto Furuoka, created first Gakken waffle buidling blocks. He later told that his inspiration was traditional Japanese wooden houses. There he saw an idea of flat blocks people can took apart and rebuild again when they need to. So he decided to create a toy which repeats this principle. Children can connect these Japanese waffle building blocks, stack them, lay them, plug, or tuck blocks in different orientations, for example, horizontally, vertically, and diagonally.

Gakken – Rotating Round And Round New Block Set

Japanese brand New Block Gakken added gears to their sets. You can spin and spin again and again, which is actually reflected in the name. Well done, what more can I say!

Gakken New Block Shinkansen – A Train And A Building Set

Japan has been inextricably linked with the Shinkansen for half a century. So this theme is also reflected in children’s construction sets. This is Gakken New Block Shinkansen set.

Gakken Sawmill

We have a new wave of construction from the Japanese Gakken set and similar sets. My son, 4.4 years old, makes a lot of things from the construction set – both the simplest things and complex ones. These diving mask, a watering can and a sawmill are the most recent examples. In this machine, the lighter blue part is moving along the dark blue one. It is pressing the material being cut to the sawing discs))))

Gakken are probably one of the most popular “waffle” blocks sets. The Gakken sets have many different forms and shapes of the blocks. There are arched blocks, blocks with different numbers of pegs on different sides, and figurines. There are also some pieces that can work like the rails for the Japanese Gakken set trains. That same pieces are just as thick as any other Gakken blosk, and you can use them in many ways, not just for building rails.

Gakken are Japanese sets, and Japanese Amazon have bigger choise of them. But the shipping may be long and expensive. In countries that are far from Japan, finding these sets can be more tricky, but there are plenty of sets that have pieces of the same shapes.

Original Gakken New Blocks were invented in Japan in 1960s. They original purpose was education and helping children develop imagination and fine motorics. Gakken quickly became popelar in Japan, and they are one of the oldest “waffle” blocks that are still around. There are many sets that try to repeat Gakken concept, but not all of them have this high quality. Another similar set brand is Danish Plus Plus, but in Plus Plus all the pieces have the same shape.

Excellerations Soft Rabbit Blocks

These Excellerations Soft Rabbit blocks are somewhat unique. It is an interesting version of the “waffle” blocks with the pieces that look like cartoonish rabbits. All the pieces also have rabbit faces on them, and usual “waffle” pegs are rabbit ears and limbs in this set. Excellerations Soft Rabbit blocks are made from soft plastic, and they have no sharp edges and corners, so they are safe for the small kids to play. The pieces are very big – impossible to swallow and easy to hold. The set also comes in a big storage box, where all the pieces fit neatly.

However, these pieces are not flexible enough to actually bend them for the construction. The pegs of these pieces are very thick, so the number of ways you can contact them to the other pieces is very limited. Also, all the rabbits are the same, which is also somewhat limiting. The number of the pieces – 36 – is very small, compared to many other “waffle” sets.

In general, this set is similar to Danish Plus Plus, which also has pieces of the exact same shape in it. But Plus Plus and similar waffle blocks can connect in more ways and form more complex crafts. Because of this and the size, the Rabbit blocks are better choice for toddlers than for older kids.

Gakken Watering Can

Lux Blox

Lux Blox is an interesting version of the “waffle” blocks. Each Lux Blox set has square pieces of identical size and shape. All these pieces have one socket and one peg on each side, so you can connect them to each other. Once connected, the pieces form a joint, so you can move them and keep them together at any angle.

However, connecting the pieces to the centre of another pieces is not an option, unlike in many “waffle” building kits. There are also no parts of any form other than the squares, which somewhat limits the building options.

However, there are many colors of the pieces available, and the pieces have a hole in their centre, so you can add them on an axis of some sorts. For this option, however, you will need to take an axis somewhere else.

There are many sets of Lux Blox available, including very big classroom sets for many children. There are also sets of different themes, and the sets with the rubber bands to enhance the moving crafts.

Overall, these sets have almost countless building possibilities, due to their ability to contact from any side and form movable, flexible joints.

PLUS PLUS GO! Racing Cart Car

Plus Plus Go! are sets with moving parts most Plus Plus sets don’t have. They offer racing cars and other vehicles. This one is Plus Plus Racing Cart set. As always, you can build anything from the 240 pieces this set include.

Danish Plus Plus sets are among the most popular and well-known “waffle” building sets. Almost all pieces in these sets are exactly the same – except for the wheels and the baseplates. However, even with only the basic pieces, you can build almost anything.

All basic pieces have exactly the same shape and size – they look like two pluses joined together, hence the brand name. Each piece has two pegs on the long sides one peg on the short sides, and the matching empty spaces. The pieces are thick, so the pegs are as thick as they are long. Because of this, you can connect the pieces in any direction, they will hold well all the same. So you can build both 2D mosaics and all kinds of 3D shapes, connecting the pieces vertically, horizontally, or even with an angle. The Danish schools use Plus Plus kits as an educational tool. They help teach kids basic STEAM skills and help them develop fine motorics and creativity.

To add some difference and more variety to the crafts, the Plus Plus brand offers countless sets with different numbers and colors of the pieces. There are pieces of different colors and hues, glowing pieces, pieces with glitter, and so on. The sets also may include any number of the Plus Plus pieces. There are also both small traveling kits and big gift sets.
