Taikon And A Baseplate

An Taikon octagonal star connector we attached to a baseplate – in this case, a black baseplate from a mosaic kit. The star fits perfectly, not too tightly, and holds naturally, so the younger ones immediately stuck these star pieces all over the plate.

Building straws, also known as building tubes, are a popular type of construction set with unique possibilities. They allow you to create silhouettes and contours of different objects and animals. All crafts from these sets can bend and move, so kids can actually play with their creations.

Instead of blocks, these sets have flexible plastic tubes, that look and act like soft cocktail straws. They can bend in any way and hold any position you want. The tubes usually attach to each other with special plastic connectors. The connectors can look and work differently in the different sets, but there are always many ways the straws can connect. The most common version is hard pins that go inside the straw’s hollow end, fixing it in place. Some connectors of this type have only one or two pins, some may have eight or ten. They also can have different forms, like sharp corners or straight rods. However, this connection type usually means that you can connect the straws only with their ends, and never with their middles.

These straws have great building potential, but, sadly, they can’t hold their shape under pressure (unlike, say, block towers that can hold something on their top). The straws’ building possibilities also depend on how long they are.

Playmobil + Taikon

A Playmobil boy on a Taikon bar. These thick straws fit perfectly into a figurine’s hand.

Taikon Pull-Up Bars

I suggested that the girls connect the stars together, not in a web, but in pairs. These archs were the result. The girls brought figurines and played with them. Taikon’s straw fits perfectly into the Playmobil man’s hand. So we made impromptu playground near a school so the children had fun on the horizontal pull-up bars. The site is surrounded by a fence with the same 8-pointed stars. Perhaps this is the most playable building from Taikon from the latest experiments with this building set.

Taikon Trees

I remembered how we made a Christmas tree from the Connect-a-straws last winter. Now we repeated it, and then tried to make the same one from Taikon. It didn’t turn out exactly the same, but other tree options appeared. One tree (on the green plate on the left) is more openwork, supported on a trunk from connectors, and the second (on the green plate on the right) is holding on a tube. In the Connect-a-straws set, a tube passes through the holes in the connectors. In Taikon, the hole in the connector is intended for another connector, and not for the tube. Taikon tubes are more flexible, so the figures are small and openwork-like.

Taikon Flowers

Flowers made from Taikon and Connect-a-straws set. The flower stands strong on the Connect-a-straws stem, but on Taikon it falls when installed on the plate. The Taikon stem is too long and doesn’t really hold in place, but the lily from Taikon is very pretty. Anyway, both flowers are pretty and were gifted to me.

Taikon Encyclopedia

I really like the detailed informative instructions in Taikon with step-by-step layout and indication of the number of parts. It looks almost like an encyclopedia of Taikon crafts.

Taikon Basket

A small basket with a lid made from our favourite Taikon set. All our family built it together. It was very fun and calming.

Building straws are a popular and unusual type of building set. These sets include long, hollow flexible tubes that connect to each other at their ends. Since the tubes themselves have no special connecting devices, the set also includes special connecting parts. These parts are very small hard and rigid, and they have long pins that you can insert into the straws. The number and the positions of these pins can vary, so different connectors hold the straws’ ends at different angles. Because the tubes are flexible, this simple principle allows you to assemble countless shapes and crafts.

These sets are very unusual because they allow you to create any geometrical form you want and use the bent lines. The final craft will always be hollow, lightweight, and almost symbolic. However, you will still recognize these shapes, and they look more detailed and solid if they have more straws. Also, the straws are soft, so you can shorten them with a pair of common scissors if you need to. Sadly, there is no way to fix the straw after it was cut. Since the long straws bend more smoothly than the short straws connected in a row, the long ones are very valuable in these sets. So you have to be careful if you want to cut something.

BASKETBALL

Yet another craft we made from a building tube set. This is a man playing basketball, and a basketball ring (on the left). Th only broblem with this playset is that a ball can’t fit through the basket.
